AYC in Mayo

August 26, 2007

I had to hit the road for Mayo at 6:30 AM. For those that don’t believe I can get up that early here’s the proof, a snap I took near Hunker.

We had our executive meeting at nine and went on to the board meeting at 10:00. Lots of good stuff was discussed, most notably our proposal to facilitate the delivery of Green Municipal Funds, and an initiative introduced by Mayor Bev Buckway to offer an AYC scholarship for students with an interest in municipal government administration, I was happy to second that resolution. Some great news coming down the pike from Minster Hart on Monday, looks like we will be receiving substantial increases to our Unconditional Grants over the next five years.

Here’s the AYC board in Mayo’s new recreation facility. I’m continuing on with the Advocacy Working Group and an new comittee led by Mayor Buckway to review our constitution and bylaws.

The Trade Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) was discussed at length. This is an inter-provincial treaty designed to remove obstacles to trade between provinces. At first glance it is not something AYC is ready to endorse judging by the round table we had on this subject.

Exterior of Mayo’s new rec centre. Mayor Scott Bolton has every reason to be proud of Mayo. What a pretty town. If nothing else, involvement in AYC certainly gives us a chance to appreciate all of these great Yukon communities.

Here’s a view of mountains near neighbouring Keno City.

For those who haven’t been to Mayo the red section of the building showing in front is actually the town offices and council chambers. Looming behind that is the roof of the full sized gym (with a stage for drama or musical productions) which you can see in the photo of the meeting But they could easily have held their meeting in the large lounge area that gives a view of the curling rink off to the left of the photo (you can see a little of the lower roof line sticking out there), and could have taken their breaks in the other half of that room by shooting a game of pool on the side. This building is quite a facility and it ought to annoy Dawsonites more than a little to realize that it appears to have been designed and built properly, with total YTG funding, without driving the town of Mayo into bankruptcy.

Yes, it is quite a facility. I hope we can get to the same level asap.
