Like Dr. Strangelove’s twitching glove my hand wants to reach for cutting tools and make a print, a drawing, anything!
The other day when it was forty below I opted for a mental therapy day and made this lino-cut print of Lou Reed’s face (image size – 5.5″ x 6″).

Why Lou Reed? Because he has a compelling face and presence. I’m not that familiar with his work but I recognize him as an artist/poet with integrity, and that’s something I aspire to, as an artist, that is. Is it possible to be a politician with integrity? Hmmm… I just asked myself a loaded question. Let us leave it as a rhetorical one for now.
One of my musical heroes is Neko Case. I’m planning to do a colour print of her, maybe using the reduction method.

Curious about your Neko Case comment. She’s sure got a big voice for a little lady, pardner. And she plays around with genres…pop, alt country….but i am wondering how she fits into your musical hero category. Let me know the next time you’re having a fix of ribs.
Hi Kerry,
Your comment sent me to the dictionary, here’s what I found out. Hero is a priestess of Aphrodite who killed herself because her lover drowned while swimming across a river to visit her. A hero is also someone noted for a special achievement in a particular field.
Suffice to say that her work ‘resonates’ – forgive the art-speak term – for me in some way. I met her when she played the Dawson Music Fest a few years back. Unfortunately I didn’t know her music at the time otherwise I would have bent down and kissed the hem of her gown.
Mm mm…can’t wait for another serving of ribs!!
Forgot to mention, I think she’s incredibly sexy. Imagine… the Mayor of Dawson saying such a thing!
Hi Mr. Mayor
Glad to see you haven’t given up on your artistic side. Sorry we weren’t able to make it up there in December as we had planned, we just didn’t have the $$ but we are saving our pennies for next year. And Lewis and I won’t take it personally that you didn’t get in touch when you were here in Toronto, well maybe a little bit……
Oh yes we think Neko Case is fab, we try and see her whenever she comes throughTO
John – The Lou Reed linocut is stunning – would also look great on a T-shirt!? If you haven’t explored much of Lou Reed’s music I would suggest the ‘New York’ album and also ‘Magic and Loss’ which is a very powerful and moving concept album about the loss of two of his friends (one was songwriter Doc Pomus) to cancer. In my opinion, this album would be of great comfort to those who have lost friends or family to the disease and to those suffering from it.
I also am impressed by Neko Case – what a clear voice, ‘a voice from the ages’. I have her ‘Middle Cyclone’ CD. Regret not seeing her the times she has been in Dawson City.
Keep up the good work, you are a Yukon treasure.
