A loss like this always becomes a blow to a community like ours, especially when it involves a business like the Eldorado Hotel. Under the leadership of our Fire Chief Jim Regimbald our crackerjack firefighters were able to contain yesterday’s fire and make the best of a tragic situation. Despite the heroic efforts by our Fire Department the Jenkins’ family now faces the devastating loss of their business.
We should all be reminded of Karen’s and Peter’s generosity to our community over the years. I know I will always be grateful for the support the Eldorado provided for the Music Festival over the last 30 years. I remember going cap in hand on behalf of the festival asking Peter for assistance in our first year in 1979. Without hesitation he handed over the keys to the Eldo van so we could drive the performers back to Whitehorse. I’m sure that if you scratched the surface you would find countless individuals and organizations that benefited by the Jenkins’ generosity over the years.
I sincerely hope they are able to rebuild and start anew. As Dawsonites I hope we can find ways to support the Jenkins family in their time of need.

As Dawsonites, we have come together again to help those in need. The very evening the fire was put out, people were pitching in and moving items out of the hotel. All day yesterday and today, a large group of friends of Peter and Karen and the Eldorado, came together and started the “big” clean up. With garbage trucks, dump trucks and gooseneck trailers, many people pitched in and started the massive clean up operation. A new office is being set up across the street, and the annex rooms will be open soon. With any luck, the rebuild of the Eldorado will begin soon. Thanks to everyone for pitching in. It feels good!
